Chapter XIV
Last weekend the Reino de España deservedly won the UEFA European Football Championships and so in their honour we have cultivated a stunning selection of Spanish recommendations for this week’s Chapter. ¡Disfrútenlo!
The Chorus
Spanish folk metalband Celtian was originally formed by flutist Diego Palacio as an instrumental project layering traditional Celtic music over metal. However the addition of Xana Lavey’s magical vocals, along with a few other line-up changes, on their 2019 release En Tierra de Hadas was when the group truly found their sound. The upbeat, medieval rhythms of La Musa del Bosque draw you into the band’s second album and lead you on a journey to the powerful instrumental harmonies of Mirada de Feugo. The strong folk themes, beautiful Spanish lyrics and regular guest musicians weave a compelling fantasy story that culminates in the aptly titled and glorious eponymous track En Tierra de Hadas. We cannot think of a more high-fantasy Chorus for your ritual.
The Champion - III
Niko Del Hierro is best known as one of the founders and the longest-standing member of Madrid speed metal legends Saratoga. The Champion of Carabanchel, having come from a classical background, taught himself bass guitar and went on to perform his first gig aged only 14. Niko’s career began to take off as he formed and led several groups before ultimately joining rock giants Ñu. Finally, it was with a fellow Ñu bandmate that he conceived and birthed Saratoga. It is Niko’s speed and ferocity with his instrument that make him an ideal choice for your supergroup; his energy will surely amplify the power of your ritual to conjure something enormous.
The Curse
The magical melodies of your Chorus have piqued the interest of a young Cuélebre, an Asturian dragon which grows its bat-like wings as it ages. The serpent you have summoned has itself nothing of value to offer you but if you can defeat it in one of the prescribed ways you will free the Anjanas it holds prisoner who may in turn reward you for your heroism. Without wings this particular Cuélebre might be slightly less mobile but it is still very dangerous so keep your guard up. In particular its diet consists entirely of cattle and people and unfortunately there aren’t any cattle in the Wailing Ossuary…
